Donvier Ice Cream Maker
The Donvier ice cream maker is a unique machine – it's a modern hand crank ice cream maker that does not require ice and salt. It uses the same gel-canister technology as most electric machines, but it's a manual ice cream maker.
It's odd that more companies have not adopted this brilliantly simple idea, because the Donvier is a sturdy little machine with nothing electric about it.
Pre-freeze the canister well (as with all canisters, make sure it has frozen long enough and at low enough temperatures to get good results.) Add your chilled ingredients, assemble the machine, and turn the handle every so often. The recipes included with the Donvier ice cream maker tell you how often to turn the handle, but most people quickly develop a feel for this. Many experienced ice cream makers actually prefer having the control over how much they aerate their ice cream that a manual ice cream maker provides – and this one allows you to do that without having to deal with the mess and bother of ice and salt.
The process takes about 20 minutes.
Donvier 1-Quart Ice Cream Maker Features:
- Aluminum freezer bowl
- Makes 1 quart of ice cream, frozen yoghurt or frozen drinks
- Sturdy manual handle
- Recipe book included
The machine is easy to clean, and super easy to use. It churns out a good ice cream and is simple and safe enough for kids to use – no motorized rotating parts and nothing electric. It’s also easier to store than other models, since there’s no motor base to deal with.
On the other hand, you do have to keep turning the handle - if you don't, you'll get a grainy, icy result. And don't plan on adding ingredients during or at the end of the process - there's no ingredient spout, and if you stop the machine and take it apart to add something like nuts or raisins, the ice cream will freeze solid to the sides and it will be hard to get the machine going again.
Nonetheless, for an entry-level machine, this one gets pretty good marks. And it comes with a 10-year warranty against defects, probably the longest of any ice cream machine. (Not that you’re likely to need it – this little hand crank ice cream machine is built to last.)
