National Ice Cream Day

National Ice Cream Day is a legal U.S. holiday signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of July. The presidential proclamation that instituted the holiday enjoined the American people to observe the day with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

If you want to do the day proud, here are a few suggestions of "appropriate ceremonies and activities" with which to celebrate the world's favorite dessert.

  • Throw an ice cream party. Even better, make it an ice cream costume party! Have fun making your own costumes at the party.

  • Have a picnic and bring along a hand-crank ice cream machine, ice and salt and have fun taking turns cranking the dessert.

  • Test your knowledge of ice cream by taking our ice cream trivia quiz. The winner gets an ice cream cone, of course!

  • Recycle popsicle sticks to build an ice cream cone, picture frame, mini doll house (or a full-size Viking ship, as did these Dutch school children).

  • Kick off a new weight-loss resolution by starting on the ice cream diet. Believe it or not, there really is such a thing - and it's actually good for you, too!
