Play Freeze Ice Cream Maker Ball
The Play Freeze ice cream maker ball is a novelty item for kids. It is a bright, colorful, fun take on the old camping trick for making ice cream. The hollow ball contains a cylinder in which you place the ingredients. You then pack ice and salt in the space around the cylinder, seal the thing and - play ball! About 15 to 20 minutes later, you’re supposed to have ice cream.

Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker (The Ice Cream Ball)
The ball ice cream maker would be a good idea except for some annoying design flaws. Incomprehensibly, the opening through which you fill the ball with ice isn't really large enough to put in regular ice cubes. This means you first have to crush your ice. Unless you happen to have a crushed ice dispenser at home, that's a major pain right there. In addition, the ball isn't round. It is made of many facets with ridges, which means if drips dry before you can rinse them off, it is very difficult to clean. Since the Play Freeze ice cream maker ball is supposed to be used outside, one wouldn’t expect to have to start crushing ice nor having to wash everything immediately. The Mega ball makes a quart, but the original Play Freeze ball makes only one pint of ice cream – not enough to be worth all that trouble. The ice cream maker ball gets top marks for the idea and colorfulness, but a poor grade for execution. If you take it for what it is - a fun gadget to try once or twice – you won’t be disappointed. It can be a great surprise gift to occupy kids at an afternoon picnic or family reunion, for example. If you want to make ice cream, however, you're better off with two Zip-Lock bags.
