Rival Electric Ice Cream Maker
With Gel Canister
The Rival electric ice cream maker with a gel canister is an entry-level machine. If you want to try a gel-canister model to test the concept and don't want to spend a lot of money, then perhaps this machine is worth a try. You could do much better, though.

This ice cream machine comes in 1-quart and 1.5-quart models. The removable canister is easy to clean, as is the outside of the machine.
On the other hand, many customers complain the motor overheats after running for about 20 minutes. Since the built-in safety feature turns off the motor when that happens, the ice cream doesn't finish churning and melts while the motor cools down enough to start the machine again.
As with all gel-canister electric ice cream makers, you also have to make sure you pre-freeze the canister long enough (Rival recommends 24 hours) and at cold enough temperatures, otherwise you’ll get slush instead of ice cream.
Overall, not a great buy – spend the extra $15 for the Cuisinart ICE-20 and you’ll be much happier.
And if you have your heart set on a Rival ice cream maker, then opt for the oval ice cream bucket instead. Yes, you’ll have to deal with ice and salt, but it's a better machine by far.
