This Rival electric ice cream maker is a bottom-of-the line model for those wanting to try a cheap gel-canister electric ice cream maker.

Although the idea of this machine is similar to more expensive canister models, Rival cut the price through a light-weight plastic body and a motor that isn’t all that strong.

You can make ice cream with this thing, but the only people who will find it convenient to use are those switching over from the ice-and-salt method of ice cream bucket freezers. Although it is supposed to make ice cream in 20 minutes, customers report they often have to pause the machine half-way through to make sure it is mixing ingredients properly.

People have also reported the gel-canister doesn't reach cold enough temperatures to freeze the ingredients to anything harder than milkshake consistency, no matter how long they pre-freeze the canister for.

If you’re looking for an ice cream maker under $30, you’d be better off with one of the old-fashioned but electric Rival ice cream freezers that use salt and ice.
