Wooden Rival Ice Cream Freezer Review
This Rival ice cream freezer is styled like the iconic old fashioned ice cream maker of yore - it is a real wooden bucket. It has done away with the handle once used to churn the cream, however. Like every other Rival ice cream freezer, this is an electric ice cream maker. The motor turns the inner container around the paddle, so you don’t need to hand crank. But that’s where modernity ends. You freeze the ice cream by inserting your ingredients in the inside container and stacking layers of ice and rock salt in the space between the container and the bucket in which it sits.

Rival 5-Quart Wooden Electric Ice Cream Maker
Why would you choose this machine over a more modern gel-canister model? The fun of layering salt and ice definitely provides an opportunity to give the kids an interesting lesson in chemistry, but that has its limits. The real reason is quantity and quality. This machine makes 5 quarts of ice cream in half an hour. The largest gel-canister or self-cooling compressor model for home use makes only makes 2 quarts. And, to be honest, if you don't mind the labor intensive stacking of ice and salt through this process (not the easiest project, when you live in a hot climate!), old fashioned ice cream makers like this do produce a smoother ice cream than most of the gel-canister models. That said, this machine costs less than half what most bucket-style ice cream freezers do. The cheapness of the product shows in its construction. While many people praise the ice cream this machine turns out, there have been many complaints of the bucket leaking, and problems with the metal parts of the paddle shaft. If you've got your heart set on an old fashioned ice cream maker, you'd do a lot better putting out the extra money for a White Mountain machine.
